AMD不著急推混合式x86處理器, 等到操作系統能正確適配也不遲

Intel全年發布的Lakefield處理器採用了類似ARM的big.LITTLE大小核設計,而且準備在
12代的Alder Lake處理器上推廣到全平台,而AMD這邊,雖然他們早在2017年就申請了異
構內核的混合處理器的專利,但似乎沒有打算在PC操作系統能夠正確使用這類處理器之前
把這類CPU推向市場。

PC Gamer就此事訪問了AMD副總裁兼產品首席技術官Joe Macri,其實AMD一直在研究類似
big.LITTLE的結構,已經有15年了,所以這並不是一種新的概念,他們會繼續研究它,但
不會談論AMD是否會把它投入市場,他認為對手把這種處理器投入市場只是為了營銷,為
了看起來有更多的核心數量,而不是為了更高的性能或者更好的電源效率。
AMD認為這種混合式處理器目前最大的問題是需要OS和軟件的配合才能得到正確的調度,
現在的調度程序最看重的就是對稱性,這樣就不用管其他任何事情直接把任務分派下去就
行了,任何操作系統都喜歡對稱的內核,這樣就不會給出錯誤的答案。但你把一個不對稱
的處理器投放到市場,操作系統就得配備一個更為智能的調度器,這樣才能解決這一問題
。
ARM的big.LITTLE混合芯片結構在很大程度上確實是提高性能的同時降低了功耗,這在智
能手機與平板電腦這種對電池敏感的移動設備上是非常重要的,但放到台式機上就是另一
回事了,Intel的Alder Lake會配備8個Golden Cove以及8個Gracemont內核,雖然看起來
這個處理器有16個核心,但只有一半是適合遊戲PC使用的。
其實AMD非常了解OS調度程序的重要性,最早在推土機架構處理器上由於Windows的調度程
序使得實際性能表現無法達到AMD的預期,所以AMD就必須與微軟合作以確保調度正常,經
過優化的調度程序確實提高了性能,但也無法幫助AMD擊敗對手,這對AMD的教訓還是挺深
刻的。
所以在涉及x86大小核處理器的問題上,AMD給出的答案非常保守,他們正在等待一個適合
的時機,當操作系統能夠正確判斷,當調度程序和內存分配器能夠正確分配任務,他們就
會在適合的時間拿出對應的產品。
