AMD 太仰賴台積電應分散供給?外媒:雙重下單問題

晶片巨擘 AMD 13 日稍晚宣布,未來幾年將向 GlobalFoundries(GF)購買 16 億美元
矽晶圓。
MarketWatch報導,美國證交會(SEC)呈報文件顯示,AMD表示和GF達成第七次晶圓供應
協議修正案,「要依據當前全球供給環境的背景,拓展GF的產能承諾和晶圓定價」。根
據修正案,雙方敲定2022~2024年的價格和採購目標,要是採購未達標,AMD將支付「部
分」價差。
GF和AMD關係深厚,AMD 2009年拆分旗下的晶圓代工部門,並與Advanced Technology I
nvestment結盟,成立GF。
Overclock3D 2月報導批評,AMD過度仰賴台積電,傷害AMD的成長前景。晶片荒讓AMD遭
受重創,供給晶片給Sony PlayStation 5和微軟Xbox Series S / X,且AMD旗下RDNA2
GPUs和Ryzen CPU也缺貨。文章提到,要是AMD下單給更多晶圓代工廠,就能生產更多晶
片,創造更多業績,AMD太依賴台積7奈米製程,傷害了AMD。
Overclock3D文章寫到,晶圓代工供給吃緊,讓AMD在去年第四季喪失市佔,要是台積有
更多7奈米產能,AMD就能賣出更多晶片、賺更多錢。文章坦承AMD無法快速下單給其他代
工廠,但呼籲AMD未來應該分散訂單給三星電子。
ExtremeTech發文反駁此看法,表示三星和台積都產能全開,AMD轉單無法解決供給短缺
。
不只如此,雙重下單問題大,AMD必須支付兩倍的設計費用,分別請台積和三星客製化生
產晶片。兩邊下單的大風險是, AMD等於押注三星和台積都能達到期望的時脈和功耗目
標。要是其中一家無法達成,AMD就得降低晶片表現,才能出貨相同產品。此種情況早有
前例,蘋果A9處理器同時下單給三星和台積,結果台積晶片電池壽命表現遠超三星。另
外,iPhone曾同時使用高通(Qualcomm)和英特爾的modem,最後必須限制高通modem,
以免過度突顯英特爾modem速度太慢的問題。
