Apple to Pay Common Royalty Rates for Music Service

Apple is known for driving a hard bargain, but, in the case of its forthcoming
music service, it’s not seeking a bigger cut of revenue than its rivals.
Apple said it will pay music rights owners about 71.5% of revenue in the U.S.
and about 73%, on average, for songs played abroad. That is largely in line wi
th the payments by other music streaming services.
The Apple Music terms, reported earlier by technology site Re/code and confirm
ed by an Apple spokesman, refutes a story that said Apple was offering to pay
only 58% of revenue to music rights owners.
Apple announced last week that it plans to offer a streaming music service for
$9.99 a month for individuals or $14.99 a month for families. Apple is offeri
ng a three-month free trial from June 30. During that period, Apple won’t pay
music owners anything for songs that are streamed.
The subscription service, which closely matches streaming music provider Spoti
fy’s model, is part of a suite of music offerings including a 24-hour-a-day r
adio station called Beats 1.
