研究人員的主要目標為以石墨烯取代目前HDD盤片使用的碳基塗層 (COC) 材料,該塗層用於數據從 HDD 的讀寫頭快速寫入時保護盤片。
縱觀硬碟技術發展,廠商為了實現更高的資料密度,進而不斷拉近磁頭和盤片之間的空間。 COC 的厚度已從 1990 年代的 12.5nm 縮小到今天約 3nm,當前每平方英寸最大可實現約 1 TB 的資料密度。
研究人員指出可以利用石墨烯的輕薄(一個原子厚)堅固且光滑的特性將 HDD 密度提高 10 倍。 如果製造商採用熱輔助磁記錄技術 (HAMR) ,石墨烯保護層可實現低於 2nm 的保護層,因此可以開發每平方英寸 4 到 10 TB 的面密度
劍橋研究人員用一到四層石墨烯取代了現行盤片使用的COC塗層。測試項目包含摩擦、磨損、腐蝕、熱穩定性和潤滑化學品反應。
實驗結果指出與COC 相比,石墨烯能夠將摩擦降低兩倍,並提供更好的耐腐蝕性和耐磨性。單個石墨烯層可將腐蝕性減少2.5 倍。
研究人員描述如能證明石墨烯可以作為HDD的保護塗層並且能夠承受 HAMR 寫入技術工作條件,將會是一個非常重要的研究成果。考慮到 2020 年共生產了大約 10 億 TB 空間的HDD,這些成果將會是石墨烯在尖端技術中大規模應用的前景。
