IBM 和 Samsung 新的電晶體技術可以突破 1nm 以下晶片

IBM 和 Samsung 在美國舊金山舉行的 IEDM 國際電子元件會議上,共同發表名為
Vertical Transport Field Effect Transistors(VTFET)的新晶片設計,是把電晶體以
垂直方式推疊,電流也會以垂直的方式通過,與今天通常是以水平方式擺放的不一樣。但
為什麼要這樣設計呢?據指有兩個主要好處,一是個這能突破「摩爾定律」對於 1nm 晶
片設計的的瓶頸,而更重要的是提升電流並可以減少能源的消耗。
據計算,VTFET 在與 FinFET 電晶體設計相比,能把處理器速度提升兩倍,但同時能耗就
減少了 85%。以實用性來說,手機的續航力會最終延長至充一次、使用一週!甚至如果用
於挖礦 cryptomining 的用途,就能大大減少區塊鍊、加密貨幣等技術對環境的影響。
不過這次 IBM 和 Samsung 並沒有透露什麼時候會以商用產品上應用 VTFET,只是市場上
才不只有他們擁有突破 1nm 的技術,因為 Intel 在 7 月的時候就表示已經完成設計,
同時更目標在 2024 年就開始推出「埃」時代的晶片。
